Australian Labradoodle and Australian Cobberdog Colors and Coat Types: A Guide for Breed Enthusiasts.

Australian Labradoodle and Australian Cobberdog Colors and Coat Types: A Guide for Breed Enthusiasts.

Australian Labradoodles and Highlands Australian Cobberdogs have much in common.  They were both bred many years ago by the same renowned Breeder, Beverley Manners of Rutland Manor Cobberdogs in Australia;  Hence, they share many characteristics, one of them being the coat and color varieties they come in. These dogs make fantastic pets in loving family homes,  they have an inane ability to get along very well with people, other dogs, and other animals.

Not only do they have very similar coats and colors but they also share the same gentle demeanors, outgoing and sociable temperaments, and extremely caring, intuitive, friendly, and loving personalities that make them great dogs for all kinds of families. If you’re a breed enthusiast when it comes to Australian Labradoodles, then you’re sure to love the improvements made to the breed exhibited by our very own Highlands Australian Cobberdog as well.   The Cobberdog was originally bred to improve upon some traits of the Labradoodle; for example, Labradoodles tended to have a spindlier body structure (something that came from the Poodle),  longer ear sets (which cause more ear infections) and many came originally with a curlier wooly coat.  The Cobber dog on the other hand displays a coat that has elements of the original wool and fleece coats of years ago, it has a blockier body and head, higher ear sets that result in fewer ear infections, and allergy and asthma-friendly coats.

As said above, the original Labradoodle coat was a wool coat, generally speaking a curly coat.  With new infusions having been done by the Breed Founder over at least a decade, the breed coat changed over years to more of a wool/fleece combo coat which in some cases was curly, in other cases curly/wavy, and even straight fluffy coats became the norm.  The newer coat types, specifically wool/fleece combos resulted in coats that later became non-allergenic and asthma-friendlier coats.

In addition to the coat textures, there are many unique and vibrant colors that are bred within Australian Labradoodles and Highlands Australian Cobberdogs. Within each distinct color type, every dog has their own special coloring that makes them truly one of a kind. And with various coat types, the many colors of Labradoodles and Cobberdogs can be organized in multiple ways, depending on the dog’s specific breeding.  You may be surprised at how many distinctive colors can be found among the many breeding variations of Australian Labradoodles and Highlands Australian Cobberdogs. While some colors are more common than others, all of these colors can be found among Labradoodles around the world:

Australian Labradoodle and Cobberdog Colors:

Chocolate: As the name would suggest, Chocolate Labradoodles and Cobberdogs got their coloring from the original breedings with Chocolate Labs many, many decades ago. True Chocolates are a deep, rich brown in color, though many dogs’ coats can sometimes fade to a lighter brown with age.  They usually have brown or rose-colored noses matching their fur color.

Caramel: Caramel Labradoodles and Cobberdogs are typically red in color, sometimes with hints of brown.  What distinguishes the “caramel” coloring from “red” or “apricot” coloring is the fact that the caramels have noses that are either “rose” colored or “brown”.

Apricot: The coat color of Apricot Labradoodles resembles the color of a ripe apricot. The primary difference between the apricot coloring and the red coloring is that the apricot tends to be a shade or two lighter than the Reds.  Apricot and Red Labradoodles and Cobberdogs have black noses.

Cream: Cream Labradoodles are the shade of milk or cream.  These Labradoodles have black eyes and a black nose and can sometimes have apricot highlights;

Cream/Apricot: Sometimes cream Labradoodles can be born with or develop apricot highlights in their cream coats, which gives them the color Cream/Apricot.

Red:  Red Labradoodles and Cobberdogs have coats with a high level of red undertones on their reddish/brown coats. They have black noses, and their coloring can sometimes lighten over time but in some cases, they even darken.

Parchment: The Parchment labradoodle is very unique.  Some Labradoodle and Cobber dog enthusiasts compare the Parchment hue to a cup of coffee with plenty of milk mixed in. Parchment labradoodles and Cobberdogs can range in lightness or richness of tone, but they all tend to be a creamy beige color with hints of darker brown in certain places. These Labradoodles usually have brown noses that are darker than most of their fur.

Chalk: Chalk Labradoodles have a coat color that is almost white but just a bit too textured to be classified as pure white. This means that Chalk Labradoodles usually have undertones of various colors throughout their coat that prevent them from appearing as White Labradoodles. Chalk Labradoodles tend to have black noses.

Café: Café Labradoodles are similar in coloring to Parchment Labradoodles but with a darker overall hue. Their color can range from light chocolate to deep beige, and many have yellow or golden undertones. This color can take a few years to fully develop, and Café Labradoodles often have deep brown noses similar in color to Parchment Labradoodles. In most cases, the Cafe Labradoodle coloring is a color that develops over time usually starting out dark chocolate but tending to lighten later on.

Silver: Silver Labradoodles can range greatly in the richness of their color, but all Silver Labradoodles and Cobberdogs have a distinctive mix of dark and light coloring within their coats that create a silver tone. Many Silver Labradoodles are born with a black coat and eventually develop the silver color over a few years. Silver Labradoodles usually have dark gray or black noses. Black: Many Labradoodles have spots of black on their coat, especially those with non-solid coat types. However, in order to be considered a Black Labradoodle, the dog must have a completely black coat with no other colors mixed in. These Labradoodles get their strong coloring genes from Black Labs, and they typically have noses just as dark as their coats.

More Australian Labradoodle Coat and Color Types:

Once you understand a bit more about the different colors that can show up within an Australian Labradoodle or Highlands Australian Cobberdog’s coat, it’s interesting to learn about the various coat types that determine how these colors interact with one another. While these are some of the most common coat and color types, every dog is unique and can have their own mixture of coat types, depending on their breeding;  these are some of the most common coat types:  wool/fleece coat combo; curly/ wavy fleece combo: or straight fleece/wool combo coats.)

Parti: Parti Labradoodles and Cobberdogs are at least 50% white, with another solid color making up the rest of their coat. The specific location of the white and the other color throughout the dog’s coat can vary, but many Parti Labradoodles have white chests, front legs, and tails, while the rest of their bodies are made up of the other color. The pigment of a Parti Labradoodle’s nose will match its solid non-white color.

Phantom: Phantom Labradoodles have one solid color that acts as their base. Then, they will usually have markings of a second color above their eyes, on their snout, on their throat or chest, and on their feet. In many cases, a Phantom Labradoodle’s base color is black. Usually, Phantom Labradoodles’ noses match their base color.

Solid:  Solid-colored Labradoodles are exactly what they sound like Labradoodles with one solid color all the way through their coat, with little if any smaller patches or highlights of another color.
